The benefits of Vitamin D

WHAT IS VITAMIN D?

Vitamin D (or prehormone) is an essential vitamin for the proper functioning of our body.

In its case, we speak of a non-essential vitamin due to the fact that our body is capable of synthesizing it from the Sun's rays. However, the rays of our star are not enough to meet our needs, especially in winter. The recommended daily requirement is 600 IU (international units) and changes with age.

This vitamin ensures bone mineralization throughout our lives and combines with calcium for this. It also has other interests for cognition, diabetes prevention, modulation of inflammation and the fight against oxidative stress.

Vitamin D is also involved in our body's immune response process, and is beneficial in the prevention of high blood pressure. Finally, vitamin D helps prevent osteoporosis.

HOW TO RECOGNIZE A DEFICIENCY?

The symptoms of a deficiency can be numerous:
  • fatigue,
  • depressed mood,
  • lack of tone,
  • muscular weakness,
  • diffuse pain,
  • cramps,
  • difficulty walking,
  • sometimes bone pain, etc.

HOW TO FILL A VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY?

Regular exposure to the sun, when the season or our living conditions allow it, is the best way to provide our body with the quantity of vitamin D it needs.

However, when this is not possible, this deficiency can be filled through the daily use of food supplements such as Vitamin D3 in capsules for example.

PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

Contraindications

Taking vitamin D is not recommended in the event of excess calcium in the blood and urine. The same applies if you have a history of kidney stones containing calcium.

A course of vitamin D is unnecessary if your blood levels are good and within normal limits. Ask your doctor for advice before starting a treatment.

Side and/or undesirable effects

With vitamin D, there is a real risk of overdose, with harmful consequences for the body. Therefore, it is recommended to seek medical advice as part of your treatment in order to ensure intakes adapted to your needs.

Adverse effects may appear in the event of an overdose: fatigue, headaches, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, intense thirst, dehydration, increased urine volume, kidney stones, kidney failure, etc.
